Shadow Path
By T. Jackson King "Tom" (New Mexico, USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Shadow Path (Portals) (Kindle Edition) Set in Corpus Christi, Texas, four years after Portals have opened between the Human world and Otherwhere, the home of elves, dwarves, ogres, shades, sorcerors and weird fantasy critters galore, P.L. Blair begins her murder mystery story with the smell of a dead ogre upsetting Detective Kat Morales. Morales is working with her Elf partner Tevis MacLeod to follow a trail of spells, swords, deaths, conspiracies and evil most foul to a final match-up between Tevis and his former Elf lover Coira, who has "gone bad" in a spectacular way. There are spells, wards, crystals, even a dragon or two, but what most struck me about this wonderful novel was the matter of fact, smooth storytelling that moves along in a dynamic way from puzzle to puzzle to helper to foe in a final battle n the Between dark realm that lies "in between" the Human and Supernatural worlds. Loved the back story of the various critters from Otherwhere, how some cope with renewed access to Earth while others don't, and how a seemingly simple murder mystery can become a "sitting on the edge of your chair" wonderful tale! Outstanding writing, fine characters and action a minute make this contemporary paranormal fantasy a winner!

P. L. Blair's Stormcaller novel is a wonderful read that
takes place mostly in Other Where, the parallel Earth where Elves, Wizards,
Dwarves, Djinns, Pegasus horses, Dragons and living sailing ships exist and
move within an atmosphere that literally is infused with Magic. The task for
her prime characters Kathryn Morales, Tevis the Elf and Arvandus the ancient
wizard is to take on and destroy Tlaloc, an Aztec entity that thinks itself a
god and who has powers to destroy Kat's hometown of Corpus Christi with a
deadly hurricane. Plus Tlaloc wants regular human sacrifices. This novel
follows on the first Portals novel, Shadow Path, but it is a full blown,
complex, dangerous and sometimes nail-biting expansion of the story of two
detectives, Kat and Tevis. While there is a romance element in it for Kat, it
is mainly a quest to defeat an ancient evil that has reached out to Earth, and
Kat's home. I loved it. Blair's storytelling is smooth, fast, easy to read and
highly evocative at many stages. The text is clean, professionally produced and
I am all too eager to buy and read the third book, Deathtalker, in this
magnificent series. Any fantasy reader who loved Harry Potter and the mixed
world of mundane folks and magical critters/people will love this novel, and
this series. Bottom line--these are wonderful characters you will come to love
and feel anxious about. No writer could do better than that!

STORMCALLER, the second book in the PORTALS SERIES by P.L. BLAIR,
had me just as enthralled as the first book, SHADOW PATH. I just can't get
enough of these books! If you are not a fantasy buff, please don't let the
fantasy genre scare you off. Ms. Blair has completely hooked me with her
wonderfully creative Portals series books. I was just as captivated with
STORMCALLER from beginning to end as I was when I read SHADOW
PATH.
Detective Kat Morales and her Elven partner, Tevis, are up against
the mighty Tlaloc, the ancient Aztec God of rain, storms and disease, who has
given an ultimatum to the inhabitants of Corpus Christi. Either worship him, as
was done by his people in the past, or he will destroy Corpus Christi and all
those that live there.
The journey into the Otherside for the cast of
returning characters, Kat, Tevis, the wizard - Arvandus, the love talker -
Gairth and Achmed the Djinn, starts here. I was thrilled to learn that in order
to confront and fight the ancient Stormcaller, this wonderful cast of characters
had to travel far into the Otherside. I was given a peek into the Otherside in
Shadow Path and was very excited about getting a better look. Ms. Blair took me
on an adventure I won't soon forget. I was also happy to see that Kat, a human,
had some very interesting developments of her own while traveling through the
Otherside. I can't wait to see how that unfolds in the rest of the
series.
While I don't think it's necessary to read these books in order
because the first two books in the Portals series were stand alone, I highly
recommend reading them in order because they are both so good. I'm really
looking forward to the third in the series, Deathtalker, being released in
digital format soon.
If you are a fan of fantasy, pick this series up.
You'll LOVE it. If you are new to the fantasy genre, take a chance on these
books. You won't regret it.
